Solar exposure is a major parameter in planning our indoor and outdoor living environment. The solar conditions can be analyzed prior to construction to establish year-round quality. 

For the outdoors (open & public space) we aim to provide shaded areas during summertime while exposing these areas to the sun during wintertime. 

For indoor spaces, we test the envelopes and openings to provide healthy solar exposure for light and heat, while eliminating direct sun radiation.

The built environment also affects solar exposure on its surroundings, for example:

  • A tall southern building that casts a shadow on a northern roof or park
  • A narrow, tall structure will cast a thin long shadow for a short time
  • A wide, low structure will cast a wider but short shadow for a longer time
  • A wide, open gap between buildings facing south will allow exposure to the sun midday

 

At WAWA we perform shading analysis to solve three different objectives:

  • Shading & solar exposure on open space: to improve open space microclimate and define comfortable walking paths and outdoor recreation areas.
  • Solar exposure on and in the buildings: to provide passive heating and natural lighting (mainly on southern façades).
  • Renewable Energy: Examining the economic feasibility of photo-voltaic systems (solar panels) on rooftops, open spaces, parking lots, and other spaces with high sun exposure.

 

The results of this simulation serve as an enlightening planning tool. We formulate recommendations for the architect, offering alternative solutions to achieve the space’s highest potential by utilizing the natural conditions to benefit the project.
